We're liking the free Tuna character rig, downloadable for free from Highend3d.com. He's relatively light, at just 9MB, and he should give you real-time playback in your viewport. So far we haven't uncovered any major flaws or weaknesses.

Modelled by Ugur Ulvi Yetiskin, and rigged with AdvancedSkeleton, this well-crafted character rig looks to be a good option for students studying character animation.
