We're liking this Leopard Rig by Truong, available for free download at Gumroad. It is an attractive, well-structured rig with simple controls, and it's pretty easy to figure out how to use it.

The only trouble is that it's hard to get real-time playback in the viewport in Maya, which means extra effort making a playblast of your work to see how you're getting on.

Of course, most production rigs won't give you the luxury of real-time playback, but it's certainly handy when you're learning  Maya to be able to see your animation in real time in the viewport.

So, how do students get the most out of this rig?

Settings
Setting up your shot, make sure you find the little blue cross on the side of the rig; it's the FK/IK Spine switcher. Under FKIKBlend, set this channel to 10. This will enable you to animate the up and down motion on the leopard's body more easily.

Can you get real-time playback?
Not really, and this is the rig's biggest weakness, that you have to keep making a playblast of your animation, to check your work.
