TALL
First-Ever Theatrical Run of Manfred Kirchheimer's Rapturous Portrait
of 20th Century Architects in New 2K Remaster
Starting at the turn of the last century, visionary architect Louis Sullivan (mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright) built rhapsodies in brick, steel, and terra cotta. Now, with Kirchheimer’s images, Sullivan's finds a filmmaking champion perfectly matched to capture the beauty of his work. Telling the story of Sullivan and his nearest rival, Daniel Burnham (architect of the Flatiron Building), Kirchheimer’s impassioned film uses both original and archival materials to describe the rise of the skyscraper itself, a riotous outburst of creative exuberance that changed city life forever. Narrated by Dylan Baker (Happiness, "The Americans"). A Cinema Guild/Streetwise Films release

SALESMAN
New Restoration of the "Direct Cinema" Masterpiece by
Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin
Following traveling salesmen for the Mid-American Bible Company from their Boston headquarters to a Chicago convention to their door-to-door rounds in lower middle-class Opa-Locka, Florida, Zwerin and the Maysles brothers not only produced one of the foundational films of the “Direct Cinema” documentary movement, but a compassionate, cutting depiction of an American scene largely untouched by the ongoing counterculture explosion. From among a cast of real-life drummers sporting colorful animal nicknames, one emerges as the film’s kind of protagonist: Paul Brennan, “the Badger,” a self-styled Willy Loman forever lamenting his hopelessly slumping sales figures while he stays indefatigably on the grind.A starkly beautiful interrogation of the commercial exploitation of religious belief, the film is made without a single grain of condescension. Simply, one of the most influential of all American films. Restored by the Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation, with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation. A Janus Films release.

LEGEND OF THE MOUNTAIN
New 4K Restoration of King Hu's Wuxia Classic
Always the maverick, King Hu (A Touch of Zen) was working entirely independently on Legend of the Mountain, heading into rugged terrain in South Korea to film this atmospheric, hypnotic work suffused with supernatural overtones, which tells the story of a secluded scholar confronted by two seductive specters who threaten to draw his attention away from the sutra he’s struggling to transcribe. One of the purest expressions of Hu’s ethos, in which philosophy and action merge as one, in a new restoration which reveals it to be one of his most gorgeous films as well. A Kino Lorber release.
